Illustrating Principled Design: The Early Evolution of a Cognitive Tutor for Algebra Symbolization

چکیده
This paper provides an illustration of the principled design of an interactive learning environment. It provides a view of the early stages of this process where design, testing, and redesign are most critical. The long term goals of principled design are twofold: (1) to create a system that can be convincingly demonstrated as an effective and practical learning aid and (2) to provide a replicable account of how and why the system is effective. A principled design is one that is both theoretically guided and empirically supported. A principled design is guided by a set of theoretical principles and specific pedagogical hypotheses (Anderson, Corbett, Koedinger & Pelletier, 1995: Koedinger & Anderson, 1993). It is informed by user testing early and often. The design process is iterative: theory, design, test, redesign. Tests that fail lead first to redesign and then. if principled redesigns fail. to changes in the theory. It should be the natural expectation of the field that no Interactive Learning Environment will be fully effective in its initial implementations and that early demonstrations of limitations have a positive. not a negative, bearing on the value of the final system. The only systems immune to some failure are ones that ure never tested. Unfortunately, these are all too common. (For example. Corbett. Koedinger and Anderson (in press) report that only 25% of the papers at recent ITS conferences include any kind of empirical evaluation.) We describe the design of a particular kind of intelligent tutoring system called a cognitive tutor (Anderson, Corbett, Koedinger & Pelletier. 1995). In addition to employing artificial intelligence techniques, cognitive tutors have the defining feature of containing a psychological model of the cognitive processes behind successful and near-successful student performance. This cognitive model provides the core functionality. The cognitive model is used by a

An Intelligent Tutoring System Incorporating a Model of an Experienced Human Tutor
Symbolization is the ability to translate a real world situation into the language of algebra. We believe that symbolization is the single most important skill students learn in high school algebra. We present research on what makes this skill difficult and report the discovery of a “hidden” skill in symbolization. Contrary to past research that has emphasized that symbolization is difficult du...
متن کاملUsing Adaptive Learning Technologies to Personalize Instruction: The Impact of Interest-Based Scenarios on Performance in Algebra
Context personalization refers to the idea of adapting learning activities based on students’ individual interests and experiences. While new learning technologies make such innovations feasible, little research supports whether and how context personalization may mediate important learner outcomes, especially in mathematics. Here, we present results of a large (N = 145) randomized control stud...
متن کاملExpanding the Model-Tracing Architecture: A 3rd Generation Intelligent Tutor for Algebra Symbolization
Model-Tracing Tutors (MTTs) are intelligent tutoring systems that have been very successful at aiding student learning, but have not reached the level of performance of experienced human tutors. To that end, this paper presents a new architecture called ATM (for "Adding a Tutorial Model") which is an extension to the model-tracing architecture that allows these tutors to engage in a dialog that...

Following Computer Aided Instruction systems, 2 nd generation tutors are Model-Tracing Tutors (MTTs) (Anderson & Pelletier, 1991) which are intelligent tutoring systems that have been very successful at aiding student learning, but have not reached the level of performance of experienced human tutors (Anderson et al., 1995). To that end, this paper presents a new architecture called ATM ("Addin...
متن کاملAnalyzing and Generating Mathematical Models: An Algebra II Cognitive Tutor Design Study
This paper reports a formative analysis of a Math Modeling Tool in the Algebra II Cognitive Tutor. This tutor is designed to support algebraic reasoning about real world problems. This study focuses on reasoning about situations that can be modeled with general linear form expressions (c = ax + by). Formative evaluations of an early general linear form lesson showed that it helped students comp...
